Wondering if it would be possible to search the whois database using a name, for example you search john smith and it pulls up all their domains.

I don't see why it would be a privacy thing, you can search loads of things using peoples names, a basic example myspace you can use someones name on their and it will bring up their profile.
Theirs loads of other things you can search names with, so i cant see no reason that they wont allow it, I have the right to search for that junk, as long as I'm not on it ;D.

Yup, but it does offer a little protection as well. Anyway, the owner identity can be easily faked.

I think it's very difficult to differentiate if the user is from a company or an individual.

I think it would be better for them, more attention it gets from individuals the more company's will see its a important service.
