i have a security debate at the uni and i need some points for it... pls help.....

If you don't secure your system, you are as responsible as the person committing the
intrusion.


pls help ... i need some points for against and for......  on this... :o :'( :'( :'(

How about starting it off.
You give a good against or for argument and we shall see what we can hit back in your direction.

ok well what i thought for against was that u can't blame the user cause hackers may use new algorithms to hack into systems and we cannot prevent that from happening.. even most secured systems are valnurable to new threats.also we can argue that the vendors of the aplication must provide a security and they are held responsible for any damage caused by hackers.

what are ur opinions on this??? 

It is possible to protect yourself from hackers, but you will normally find that if you are on a uni network that your computer is not worth hacking at all this would be where you get the viruses mostly attacking you (automated) which means their isn't a hacker physically attacking you you will find that a good firewall like comodo would pick up these attacks.
So if the student has no protection he should be mostly to blame, as he could of put the uni's network at risk.

oki for against most of the people who are using pcs today ara not familar with these security issues, so they wouldn't know how to get the latest patches for virus gaurds and how to update them and so on. u can't hold them responsible for what they didn't know... and if u argue that all users should know about security threats then most of the people would not be using a pc in their day to day activites

If you are working for a company using computers they will send you either a memo or send you on a course.
Normally these computers will already be administrated stopping attacks on their network, I'm not sure if this is a fact or not but the majority of computers are in the workplaces.
so after being sent a memo for example saying don't use commonly used passwords, or don't open attachments without consulting the admins, if they do not follow these rules can you not place the blame upon them?
Home users, they now have the support for all these things, if you buy a pc from pc world for example (not recommended ;D) they now have "tech guys" who will install basic security.
Now this should stop most silly viruses.
Now if that user disables their firewall or AV they would be to blame.

At the end of the day the person who commits an attack is the one responsible.
Any responsibility for allowing the attack to happen is a secondary responsibility which is shared by the manufacturer of the software/system that is hacked and the users/administrators of the system.
in terms of responsibility it goes like this
(1)hacker
(2)software vendor
(3)security personell or system administrator in the case of a company
(4)The end user.

However in terms of a social engineering hack the end user would be partially to blame more so than the software vendor or security people.
but primarily it is always the hackers choice, the victim is always the person being exploited/rooted.
Which side are you arguing for?

i don't really believe in hacking.. i don't know.. but only if you tell me that you are from google or something like that i would believe you hacking my pc.. can anyone hack your personal computer?

Depends on your setup, in general it requires a fair bit of technical skill if you have a machine with third party firewall/antivirus.
However given enough time/energy you can hack anything.
