Zen Cart is a cool open source shopping cart solution written in PHP thats clean, sleek, easy to use and modify and can be used for most of your basic shopping cart needs.It can be run on both windows and Linux servers although it was primarily designed for linux/unix enviroments.
Easy to use and worth trying out.

If i ever produce a e-commercial site again i would never use a ready made script i would create my own, they just slow me down trying to mod a script i dont know.

Some of them are very easy to mod.
and stuff like Zen and OScommerce have loads of mods available, plus a huge support community.

I might give them a try i've only ever tried cubecart which i would say it was a bad experience, trying to add a little box took me hours!

So what features do these carts have that regular ones dont?
and why are you not releasing/selling the software.
they look fairly good.

Well you can but its kind of frowned upon though.
If the client finds out your selling software thats available free they will be pissed off.
Better to modify it and claim the fees for customisation, SEO/Graphics mods and setup.
Be smart about it.

Ah yes good idea I could do that on some level only problem is taking time to develop my own modified version, should be fun though :).
