Hi,

I have a Dell Dimension 5150.

I have 1.5GB memory in it currently. 2 matching pairs of 256mb and a single 1gb stick.

I tried to place the 2GB memory stick in the free slot but my computer's windows xp won't load. I checked the system and it does record 3.5GB memory when I install the 2GB memory stick.

any ideas????

yeah, I got it working. I did like darksat suggested and tried everything on ti's own. Turns out the higher of the 2 memory sticks needs to be in the top ports not in the bottom ones. It's working now although as it uses matched pairs and I have 2 256MB sticks and 1GB stick matched with a 2GB stick, it alll adds up to 3.25GB instead of 3.5GB as expected. the manual said it'd run slower without matched pairs.

Dual channel memory thingy?

if he has dual channel I would of thought his 2 GB stick would only be using 1GB, he would have a lot more problems.

Well, I had thought he said about matched rams so it could be due to the dual channel rams. And so if he used different sizes of ram, then it could be causing the problem for his WinXP.

I think you should buy 2GB ram or 1GB x 2=2GB ram. 1GB x 256mb +256mb Doesn't support.
