Page rank is one of the things where people who are new to seo seem to get confused, exited and worked up about.

I am going to attempt to dispell some myths about page rank and pass on some info.

Q1:if i have a higher pr than my competitor will i rank higher than him for my search term.
A1:Not necessarily. Page rank is calculated by the number of inbound links to your site and the PR of those pages.
as google sees things links are votes for your site, but these links are just general votes not always votes for your search term.
for this you need anchor text
What is anchor text. below is an example of anchor text
London Website Design (http://www.aaitechnologies.co.uk/webdesign.php?/)

the clickable part of a link is anchor text, this anchor text is voting for the term London Website Design.

your competitor may have 1200 inbound links and a pr6 but only a fraction of those links might have the correct anchor text
if you have 200 inbound links with the correct anchor text(targeted to your keyword) and off high enough pr sites you will beat him with a lower PR site.


Q2:So PR isnt that important.
Yes it is. the more PR your site has the more weight you can give anchor text through internal links to other pages.
its just not the the only factor.

Q3:what about on page optimisation, which is more important, on page or backlinks.
A3: in my opinion its about 50 / 50

Q4: whats a good PR
A4:A good achievable PR is about PR5, if you see a site with more PR than that its very popular.

Q5:how hard is it to go from a PR5 to a PR6 and can I get a PR10
A5: about 10 times harder from PR5-6, ten times harder from 6-7 etc, altavista & www.ebay (http://www.ebay) have a PR8, if you get a PR6 your better than most people.

Let's say my keyword is different from my title, what should I use ?
For example my site is "Hungry Monsters Site" but the keyword I am promoting is "dining, eatery, lunc. What's the best course of action ?

For your title put both the name and keywords in.
for your anchor text its recommended to mix it up.
eg, have both name, keyowords in some, name in other, keywords in other, and vary your anchor text to appear natural.
plus deeplink to pages besides your homepage to make the linking look natural.

So for my title I will put - <a href="http://www.site.com"> Hungry Monsters Site: Dining, Eatery, Lunch! </a>

Is this correct ?

Will deep linking be penalize ? I mean a lower ranking ?

You can just simply type that url on on your browser to find out.

Think of PR as water flowing through links.
the links are generators for keywords.
the PR is the power.

How much directory submissions is that going to take ?

Not much, all you really need is a good link from a pr4 or 5 website.

I got aq PR3 for my site (main page) but trying to increase it from 3 to 4 seems a big task.
Been submitting tons and tons to directories, but my predicted PR still is 3.

Pr only updates every few months.
Give it time.
also going from a 3 to a 4 requires some decent good links.
remember google PR is logarithmic.

Every time you go up in rank, its even harder to get to the next rank in the list.

n2kdesign homepage is a PR4 but the other pages are all PR3 or unassigned.  Hopefully it will stay the same or go up next update but I can see it dropping. Its happened to me before and its so frustrating!

How did u get your other pages assigned PR ?
Most directories dont allow deeplinking.

Your main page passes on PR to your other pages.
each page passes about 85% of its pr to pages that its linked to.
I worked out the basic google algo a while ago.
I will post it up when I remember where I put it.

Also not every page on your web site is assigned PR at the same time.  If its the first time your site has received pr, only about 30-40% of your pages are likley to get any and the rest will be 0 until the next PR update.

Actually thats not exactly correct.
Visible PR is different to actual PR.
google only updates the visible PR every few months, but the actual PR is recalcualted more often than that.

The PR gets divided by the number of onpage links.

Your asking some good questions.
I have seen a few people debate this but as far as I am aware it would not be a massive factor if it is in play.

I have never heard anyone say anything about it.
I wouldnt worry about it.

Generally because people only click on the top links.
I dont think that many people pay for premium links though.
I never have.

Paying for Google Adwords is very handy.

One of my old clients use it and they get over 200 unique visitors a day now just from adwords.

But I doubt they get much traffic from directories.
Heck, I never did get any (or maybe a little at most).

More Popular is using Adsense to rank for affiliate links.

Hmm...how does that work ?

Well generally you use adsense to pull people onto a page full of affiliate links, you get higher comission from a few affiliate programmes than you would from adsense.
Ocasionally I have seen someone using the affiliate link directly into adsense or using a 301 redirect from the landing page.
Both methods  can work quite well.

That seems overly pointless as you are charged more per click than you earn per click.

Not Necessarily.
If your really strict with your terms you can bid very low for specific multi word terms and make more on the outward clicks.
works better with affiliate links though.

I would put combinations of words that are in your title in your anchor text and related terms.

you can use google labs sets to find words that google thinks are related as well.

However I would focus mainly on the words that are in your title, have both short and long combinations on different sites, and remember that google will not treat 200 links on one site the same as it would having a link on 200 sites.
Sitewide links will pass PR but your only really getting the anchor text power from one link.

plus its good to deeplink to inner pages if you can.
the trick is to keep it looking natural and focus on quality over quantity.

Ps I like some of the SEO functionality on your Site/CMS, however the Meta keywords tag seems to be fairly spammy on some pages.
Plus its not really important for SEO any more but it can get you red flagged if you spam it.
You may want to limit it to around 50 characters or even strip it out.

my advice would be to get rid of the celebrity gossip in the title cause it's way too hard to rank for that and focus on each of the other keywords...one at a time (once you rank#1 for one, you also gain more 'authority' and will be able to achieve a good position for the rest easier :) ) !

Darksat do you think spamming some hi5 profiles would be usefull, untill he gets some valuable links?

Its still only backlinks from 1 site.
if your going to spam anything spam digg.

I second that :D, digg traffic = gold if you know what to do with your ads.

Actually it was one of the best I ever had from a social networking site.

My site was dropped to PR3 and I noticed average PR of backlinks is lower now. It seems there is not any BL site whose PR was rised. But the some stats  shows 50/50. Is there something wrong? And, how does Google update PR without Bl update?

link building is time consuming and difficult. it's not worth emailing soemone through their links page anymore. you really have to go on webmaster forums and put up a post. it's the only effective way that doesn't waste your time.

Articles are a good way of getting links.
Link building can still be effective if its done right, but its quality over quantity that really counts.

You mean the last update? Well, all my sites drop from 4 to 3 for the last update. I don't think it's your lack of link building that is causing the pr drop. Nearly everyone I see has their PR slashed by Google. Not very sure what is happening, but I think they are getting stricter about links and the weightage.
