Sorry I oversimplified.
Google will degrade your links if they are all going to the main page.
you want them to look natural so deeplinking is good, also google started to devalue main page links about 6 months ago so a good mix of deeplinks and main page links is the best way to go.
the PR will still end up filtering down to your main site.
think of PR like water.
it will eventually get to the main page as well.
