The most traffic you will ever see will be from external advertising. PPC gets some targetted traffic and somtimes it can pay off really well depending on what your site is doing/selling etc.

However the best way of marketing is the old manual method. Email footers, flyers, leaflets, newsletters, word of mouth, advertisments in local paper etc.
