Snort is good because it will protect against most automated forms of attacks.
In fact since you can update your own snort rules you can specify that it denies access to anything that isnt specified in a ruleset.
You can create your own rulesets to lock down a system or server tighter than a japanese virgin.
Saying snort will not protect you, is like saying a firewall will not protect you.
