Not actually a Joomla fan.
The structure behind it is actually fairly convoluted, makes it very hard to go under the hood and edit code.
Drupal is a lot better if you want to go advanced.
Drupals website is crap though.

As for a Custom CMS system, you can make them a lot more flexible and lightweight, and if you have written it youself its easier to make custom versions for specific clients.
