Well I would say that platform independance is a bit of an issue.
I would just base it on a Linux core and base it on an open source IDS system out there and develop some sort of better interface that lists and rates possible intrusion attempts, and possibly notifies someone by email.
Really you want a combined IDS/Firewall with email & text notification of intrusion attempts, a catagorisation for severity of attack, the ability to backtrack through proxies, the ability to create new rules easily like SNORT,and the GUI should preferably feature a half naked woman somehow.
