You plug it in and it installs drivers which redirect your traffic through the USB key, the key acts as a dedicated firewall.
Personally you get the same thing with a wireless router for the same price but a lot more functionality, and it lacks the advantage of a software based firewall such as asking which apps are allowed to access the internet.
As a firewall I think its a waste but I can imagine it could be usefull for something like having a linux PC on a stick which you could then access using something like VNC.
