I tried putting in a ad unit but it just looks awful! I haven't seen one site yet that has successfully made adsense look good!!

Yeah their about the only things that can look slightly good on a web page. but what makes it look horrible on my site is ADSENSE in big bold letters.

Do some funky stuff so. make magik, make it disappear. Actually, are you generating enough hits/money to make it worthwhile? I wouldnt ruin your nice clean blog for just a couple of pounds/dollars.

Well assume a 2% conversion rate, and an average value of under a pound and you might get 10-15 pounds a month. I think the industry average is about 75p. Possibly less.

Thats assuming 2000 unique a month at 75p a click. I would put any adverts if you are putting them in at the right hand side under the menu, and style it so it blends in. give it a week and see how it goes, remember it depends on what ads are shown and how much you get per click.

Ok go for affiliate links, there are plenty of hosting companies and other affilaite adverts you can run. Probably better for anchor text as well.

The odd time, but its generally a waste of time. Link building in general is not the most productive use of time. your better off building a bigger and better website. Content is king, then you will get natural links if its good enough.

Depends, A decent article can get you a lot of backlinks, a load of crap links can take you a while to get.

speaking about google ads.. you are right.. in many cases the site looks awfull with ads on it.. but some of them are just perfect.. if you are lucky you don't have to do anything.. but if you have the unluck to have ugly ads.. i'm sorry for your work ))
