Like I always say, never trust Microsoft.
Microsoft has begun patching files on Windows XP and Vista without users' knowledge, even when the users have turned off auto-updates.
Many companies require testing of patches before they are widely installed, and businesses in this situation are objecting to the stealth patching.

I have seen this Happen on my Moms Vista machine, one minute its working, the next its stopped, the next its working again, even with auto update turned off.
They seem to be building Vista on the fly, and I am worried they will decide to mess up XP after a specific period of time in order to force people to upgrade to Vista.
