Wireshark AKA Ethereal Network Scanner

Wireshark is a popular Network Scanner and was known as Ethereal before 2006
It is a fantastic open source network protocol analyzer for both Unix and Windows which allows you to examine data from a live network or from files captured on disk.
You can interactively browse through the capture data, delving down into just the level of packet detail you need.
Wireshark also has several powerful features, including a rich display filter language and the ability to view the reconstructed stream of a TCP session.
It also supports hundreds of different protocols and media types.
A tcpdump-like console version named tethereal is also included.
The only problem is that Ethereal has suffered from dozens of remotely exploitable security holes, so be wary of running it on untrusted or hostile networks (such as security conferences) and stay up-to-date with all the latest exploits and releases.
