Auto Detect DVD then rip to HDD on Linux

Is it possible to automatically detect a DVD in a drive and if so then rip the dvd to hard drive?

I do this so I can watch my newly brought DVD's on my PC to steam it around the house.

I've seen these small drives you can clone a DVD with so it must be possible to do it with a PC, I take it the DVD cloners decode the DVD encryption?

DVD decryption is actually fairly spotty on Linux.
However if you want to you could try http://www.transcoding.org/ with the dvd::rip frontend
or mencoder with one of these frontends http://www.mplayerhq.hu/design7/projects.html#mencoder_frontends
or, lxdvdrip, K9Copy, or one of the many other apps out there.
I still use windows for DVD backup myself.

I haven't tried ripping dvd's at all on linux yet.
I've had no end of problems backing up encoded dvd's on windows.

But I'm trying to get windows out of my house though, which is rather difficult at the moment, so many things rely upon windows .

I personally use transcode with dvd::rip frontend, in the process of doing about 300 dvds, so far only 2 out of the 150 have had weird glitches in them. I haven't automated it yet, but it wouldn't be all that difficult to have a script wait for your device to be mounted then use the cmd line version of transcode. Only problem is that some dvd's are setup differently where the first title isn't the movie, which would mean you'd have to input which one you want to rip, thusly not making it automated. But you can just make it rip the first and hope it works
