Microsoft is planning to build a language for grid computing. The purpose of the language will be to help secure and protect distributed computer systems. Microsoft has developed a prototype of a grid security language that they have christened the "Security Policy Assertion Language" or (secPAL).
The language is being developed to be able to handle trust relationships, authorisation policies, delegation policies, identity and attribute assertions, capability assertions, revocations and audit requirements. The prototype emulates a multidomain grid environment using existing Microsoft products, including Windows Compute Cluster Server 2003, the .NET framework, Windows Communication Foundation (aka Indigo), Active Directory and Kerberos plus X.509 identity management.
Grid computing connects computers, or clusters of computers, in such a way that their total computing power can be used. Examples of such are the SETI project and ebays new proposed online auction house.
It looks like microsoft is looking to change the way grid computing is handled. The question is will they corner the market or can anyone else enter the fray?
