How does google knows that a site has fresh content in the first place? I mean they must first crawl the site often right?

If google finds fresh content between the time a couple of bots spider the page they will keep on sending bots, if the bots keep finding fresh content, they keep comming as long as you have some decent inbound links as well.

if you can change content on the splash page, great.
Google dosnt drop pages cause they dont have fresh content, google indexes everything.
fresh content just sticks you higher up on the list.
