Yeah But you dont get anchor text and you can get banned.
I have seen it done before though.
I have actually done it on occasion.

its just another link so the bots can crawl your page I suppose.

links from forums dont really do much for your serps anyway with anchor text.

Like I said, link it to an ofsite site map, safer, and you can then rout the PR through anchor text.
It could matter if its done right.
