Is there a packet sniffer that will allow me to monitor all packets through my dsl gateway router? or do packet sniffers only  monitor traffic through the device in which they are installed?

Generally through the device they are installed on although im sure there are ways to do it, eg you can chip some routers and turn them into linux based PCs
or set up your router to pass all packets through your PC.
Kind of defeats the reason for having a router though.

Thats a good idea.  Stick a hub in front of the router and stick that through the router.  Why didn't I think of that.
