Ok, let's say I have a site: www.mydomain.com and let's say I have an internal page (www.mydomain.com/batteries/) which I want to rank for a phrase "powerful batteries".

And so I go submitting to Directories. Some allow me to deeplink, I link to my internal page with the anchor text "Powerful Batteries". But however a lot of directories don't allow me to deeplink, and instead I link to my mainpage (www.mydomain) with the same anchor text "Powerful batteries".

Is this good or bad for SEO? I mean I am competing for my own keyphrase for 2 pages.

Target your main page links to a related term instead, theme the links, dont have them competing for the same phrase.

As most of the users advised, optimize your first page itself for the particular term (Powerful Batteries). Don't made your other page competitive for your main index page...

So if I link my main domain with the anchor text "Strong Batteries" and my internal links with anchor text "Powerful Batteries", both will help my site for the keywords "batteries"?
