There are few free Wi-Fi networks in my area (in library and internert caffee). I intend to buy a laptop with a Wi-fi modem, will such an antenna help me to reach the Wi-Fi signal from some further distance? 100-200 meters? What are distance limits?

I remember someone building a antenna trying to reach the longest distance and it was something stupid like 10 miles.

Yeah I remember hearing about that on a hackcon website.
It was in the desert and I think there was a baloon involved.
normal ranges are between 200metres to 1KM in the open.
divide that by 2-5 through obstacles.

Based on a hill in the US had a huge antenna it was as big as him on top of some scaffolding not sure if i found it on wardriving.com can't remember now.
