Micrsoft DirectX SDK

I don't know if any one has ever had any experience with Microsoft DirectX SDK, but I have.

I started trying to get into games programming last year and bought numerous books on games development with Microsofts DirectX 9 SDK.  I rapidly discovered that Microsoft is absolutely useless when it comes to maintaining backwards compatibility.

I wrote a game using Information aquired from a few books and it was working great until I needed to implement the sounds for the game.  I was at that time running DirectX 9.0b and was aware of problems with the compatibility with DirectX 9.0a.

Microsoft have a habbit of breaking backwards compatibility between SDK releases, a major one happened between versions 6 and 7 a few years back. However they have done it again, but this time they have broken backwards compatibility within the SAME VERSION.

9.0a contains functions and features which are not compatible when compiling with 9.0b!  How bad is that?

Anway this didn't effect me because the books were based around 9.0b.  HOWEVER, even some of the coding i used from these reliable sources didn't work.  The authors themselves when contacted couldn't provide an answer.  So i decided to switch up to 9.0c. Disaster.

Again, Microsoft have broken backwards compatibilty. This now means that 9.0a, 9.0b and 9.0c are all incompatible in regards to certain librarys, in particular the library for handling graphics output.  The library has been suspended and replaced by a completly different verison that is only compatible with the newer versions of the MS Visuall C++ environment.

Long story short, I ditched VC6 after finding out that ms has disconnected it from support now, and was forced over to C++ .net beta 2. I also needed to downloaded the Windows Platform SDK.  I FINALLY managed to get everything running in the end, by that point I was so hacked off I never did finish the game.

Yeah microsoft suck at backward compatibility.
they want you to upgrade as often as possible.
A friend of mine had a smiliar problem.
