This is a recuring question with me.
I love black backgrounds - on some web sites. However I do not think they look professional on retail or business sites (unless they are maybe related to music or the likes).
What do you think?

Black backgrounds are acceptable on a very select few websites - websites that are trying to convery a certain attitude and niche such as music or art.
In most other cases, it just brings up bad memories of webdesign in 1999.

Any tips?

It depends on how good you are. also depends on the taste of the individual using it. I have seen black work very well with silver and 3d graphics elements but it really takes some skill to get the most from the site. and some people will still complain about it if they have really crappy monitors, check it on a CRT & a TFT for readability. Also even with a black template, it shouldnt be too black.

I honestly have a hard time with black backgrounds.... My eyes cannot read them well.
Allow me to use this site as an example... I have to strain to read the white text on the predominantly dark backgrounds, and when I go to post, there is a dark backgrounds behind the white text box as I type black text. Plah... I need to go into eye therapy after posting here.

I like black backgrounds...but not for areas with text thats when it gets hard o read stuff. On my site I have a black background but for the areas with text I use light brown and god backgrounds to make reading the text easier for our users.

Black backgrounds looks kind a underground for me.
I was thinking first that it is easily to read a black grounded forum for many hours (without all usual white shinning), but white letters on black is not easy to read.

Charcoal colors have more of a design feel than a straight blck design, however with the right use of other color elements they can look quite smart but it takes a good designer to pull it off, and yea music or art based sites tend to pull it off alot better
