Let's say my forum is in my subdirectory - /forums And I would like when a visitor visits my domain xxx.com, it immediately redirects (thru a php redirect) to the subfolder.
Will this affect my SEO ?

If its a 301 redirect it is fine.

The better option is to just take out a sub-domain that points there such as forums.xxx.com, like i do with www.neutron2k.co.uk

Yes, that's what I read. It seems that SE likes top domains.

Most directories dont allow deeplinking, which is a pity. Subdomains sometimes rank very well for phrases.

That leaves only paid directories.

Forum Links, Article Submissions, asking people to link directly to content. There are many ways to get deep links. Articles are good.

Articles are difficult to write. And time consuming. But maybe worth it.

I've written over 50 articles for n2kdesign now and they get a few hits. I only get about 18 unique visitors a day ,all with a single page view.
As I said in another post, you only get minimal traffic from the search engines because people are looking for very specific things.

It really depends on what you provide. you can get a lot of traffic from search engines if you do it right.

Yeah it depends a lot on what your trying to offer people. If its somthing unique, your pretty screwed at getting traffic from the search engines because no one will be searching for it.
Likewise, if your peddling somthing thats extremely common, you still have a fight on your hands.

if you think websites are bad, forums are even worse. I have a 1 year old forum which had about 100 over members, most one time visitors only.
