One host, two domains?

Here's another newbie question for you, SEO Masters. If I have two domain names, say monkey.com and penguin.com, but only one of them - monkey.com - has it's own webspace and pengiun.com is actually hosted on monkey.com/pengiun, would the two site be seen as separate by Google? In other words, do I have to buy web space for every one of my domain names or can I use subdirectories or subdomains on one hosting account?

I also created other site with an unique domain name (I registered it) on the same FTP account and the same hosting plan at my provider. The thing I noticed there was not separate statistics for both sites.

If it is accessed through pengiun.com then Google or any Search Engine won't know that it is actually hosted on a subfolder of monkey.com. They will think it as a seperate site.
However, there has been reports that Google make use of IP addresses to spot sites linking to each other.

Google checks IP numbers and even C class IP ranges.
You really want seperate hosting if you want them viewed as totally seperate by google.

solidghost and Darksat - I don't really need that much to have links between monkey.com and penguin.com, so them having the same IP address shouldn't be an issue in this case? Can you see any other problems arising?

As long as they do not have all the same backlinks going to each domain you should be fine.

Unless you are hoping to use each other as link partners or something, I really won't bother about it. Not much effects anyway, unless you overdo it.
