So, here I am, tired of windows and need to get a new OS. Since I have only heard great things about linux, I'm willing to try it out before going bananas and smashing my pc with a sledgehammer. I'm currently running a Fujitsu Siemens Amilo SI 1848 laptop with maxed configurations, WXP SP2. There's a number of things I'm looking for, and they include: -Ease of use(I've been running Windows for my whole life, and while it has served me good I need something new) -A GUI -Must be able to run Mozilla Firefox, Java and OpenOffice -May be a liveCD or liveDVD, since I, for one, don't care as long as it works. To date I've tried Knoppix LiveCD and LiveDVD, both of which only gave me a commandoprompt. I have also tried Mandriva One LiveCD and that also didn't work. I would be very grateful if anyone could guide me through the jungle of linux distros and help me ~Damage

Ubuntu 6.06 is popular with newbies to linux. ubuntu or mandrive are your best bet after using windows.

its not really something you need tutorials for. http://www.ubuntu.com/you can request free cd's https://shipit.ubuntu.com/but yeah if your using a old pc just start it up in safe graphics mode and from their on in its really basic just explore with a old pc i wouldn't recommend throwing away windows.

Any chance I can get the tech specs for you machine if your machine is new it might not have full driver support for Linux (especially for older distros) You could always try Sabayon Linux, its a new distro with good hardware support for newer machines (and its the default distro for Beryl). I recommend the live CD version Hope this helps. (PS, if your machine is new you will probably want the 64bit version)

Fujitsu Siemens Amilo SI 1848 Intel Core 2 Duo T7200 running at 2 ghz, providing 4,94 ghz. 2 gb of random Fujitsu ram AtI Mobility Radeon X1300 running at 256 mb hypermemory 120 gb Fujitsu Siemens HD Is that good enough? Also ordered the 3 ubuntu cd's, will be here in some weeks. As I may have said, I suck at hardware and OS'es(Malware is my place in the world) so you guys may need to guide me through an install.

The specs are more than powerful enough, the question is, with such new hardware components, which linux distros will have drivers for your hardware. I would try Sabayon myself, I just started using it and its really cool, and since its new should have good driver support. also, you will want the 64 bit version of Sabayon. Its a real Vista / Mac killer. The Beryl interface knocks spots of Vista and OS X together (once you enable it fully). Download sabaon linux mini live CD 64 bit version

Burn the ISO to CD using a CD burning software (like deepburner), (remember to select the Burn ISO option) Then just put/leave in/to CD drive, and reboot your PC, select the boot from CD option. Then select the second of the two graphics card options when it comes up after boot, when the login option comes up it will have sabayonuser as the username and an empty password field, just click the login arrow as password is not required (although it will also take sabayonuser as password as well) then your up and running. Enjoy.

Stupid question incoming:
I use InfraRecorder, do I need to unpack the .rar file first or can I just choose "burn image to disc"?

it shouldn't be a rar file, winrar offers to unpack the iso file but it is a .iso image file, so just burn image to disk.

Yeah, you should be able to burn the .iso file to disc.
