Any chance I can get the tech specs for you machine
if your machine is new it might not have full driver support for Linux (especially for older distros)
You could always try Sabayon Linux, its a new distro with good hardware support for newer machines (and its the default distro for Beryl).
I recommend the live CD version

(PS, if your machine is new you will probably want the 64bit version)
