Sitemaps - Will they help ?

I read that sitemaps will just help SE spiders to naviagte your site better/more efficiently.
And other uses for sitemaps ?

Extra anchor text, faster site crawl and more.
sitemaps are very good for getting a fast crawl, also help with rankings.

A faster crawl means more pages indexed by google right ?
Or does it mean pages are faster indexed by google ?

This is getting extremely confusing.
