what kind of prices could themes now fetch? I'm considering selling some, either a 1 time buy for say £400 or a theme for many people to buy for £10?

I think you guys are going about things the wrong way. You cant make custom themes and then go looking for a buyer. you have to find the buyer and then make the theme. People dont pay for the design either, they pay for who you have worked for in the past.

However, buyers always tend to ask for a sample. What if you haven't work for someone in the past? As a starter, how would you go about this?

Find a big company and offer them a freebie in return for a good reference and a start in your portfolio. You might even get them in as a repeat customer then.

Ok. I will make a wordpress theme, put my credits on it, post it all over for wordpress bloggers to download for free. This should drive me some traffic and possible get some paid jobs for other stuff. hmm? Got to build my portfolio and get noticed.

What I would do is build a wordpress theme that matches your site, and then offer the design for download as long as you have a footer link back to your site, that will give you a huge ammount of backlinks for SEO/Google. Then you can go looking for customers.

Thats what i will do. I just use a theme that was available for download as i have never blog before, after reading and reading, i decided to start blogging. Soon you will see a custom theme from me.
