Never looked into chmod but I've just always avoided 777.
What is so bad about it?
OpenLD says you must have the chmod as 777 on public html Shocked.

CHMOD 777 is read write and execute for all users.

There is a good CHMOD description here, plus a nice CHMOD emulator so you can see how it works.(the white table/grid)
