use the mods their is normally a ad manager for phpbb.
manually you need to add them in the template.

There should be template include files for PHPBB
index_body.tpl should be the main one, and you should have overall_header.tpl and overall_footer.tpl

i'm not using anymore phpbb. now i have AEF : Advanced Electron Forum Version : 1.0.4
i don't know if you know it.. but there is no template
i can't find header or footer :-??

I have to say, if you don't have a clue on how to put adverts into some basic templates you wont have a chance adding or getting support for editing AEF.
Pick PHPBB 3 or SMF or if you have the money vbullitin.
