So these are the main 3 linux players. Debian is responsible for the Ubuntu builds and the Knoppix builds. Slackware is part of Suse and the simple SLAX Redhat is responsible for the most distrobutions, yellow dog, fedora, Mandriva and PC Linux OS I haven't mentioned all the distros because that would be a waste of my time , so take your pick.

I go with slackware. Has always been my distro of choice from way back in the day, and now since backtrack is based on it, its still my distro of choice. Most Hackers are Slackers I think they saying goes.

Yeah I've noticed that. Some of the timelines I've seen are incorrect about backtrack they say its debian because of whoppix which is knoppix, but whax was based on slax which was pased on slackware. But their is more debian in backtrack than slackware.

Actually I think backtrack is very different from the current slackware and debian distros. Its based on Slax way more than anything.

All the old school distros are getting way to bloated though. Keep it small and Simple IMHO.

I have to agree with that, its going down the Windows road with all the bloatware. Its one reason I really like the ubuntu distros, they don't pack it with stuff thats going to waste space.

Sounds fairly well rounded to me. I always have a copy of Backtrack3 in my CD drive. On my hard drive im running a special dual boot, a heavily modified Windows system with my own shell frontend and a new Linux system I am developing.

I remember trying to build a distro. I gave up about a month in I then went back to slack I was curious, am I the only one that 99% builds from source, or do most of you use pkg managers to install apps?

A bit of both, im basing my new System on a Slax6 derivitave, and am using LZM moduels. Some I build from source, most I dont. Im about half way through at the moment.

I've gone back to windows full time , I'm a trator! But if it helps I'm running a different shell, explorer pisses me off. I need my windoze programs, I get fed up of using GIMP over Photoshop, or having no windows live messenger.
