Long tail SEO = Big sites

I was reading up on long tail SEO, but from what I know, long tail SEO can only work for big sites with a lot of content on different pages.

But if a site is big, it should be ranking quite well for it's main keywords right? So why the need for long tail??

To make maximum use of the content.
You can have a big site that is not well SEO'd and it may rank ok, but if you do some work on it you can then dominate the widest range of search terms, and its the longer more specific terms that convert better, are easier to rank for and can be targeted to your sites better.

It's rare that a big site is not well seo. And anyway, big sites usually rank well because they have a lot of content which Google loves.

Perhaps this long tail thing can help me with my business directory.

EG, longer title tags with more keywords related to the content.
