I am going to be starting some forums/sites specifically on SEO at some stage.

Prices depend on the site designs, do you want dynamic, static, how large, who will be producing the content, etc.

Being a web developer if a hard business. The more customers you get, the more maintenance you have to carry out etc.  Benefits are one web site can cost someone over £10,000!

Web developer not always thinking of getting high rankings.
I have known a few developers, and their SEO is bad. But they do get a lot of hits. Primiarily thru advertisements and promotions.

hits are irrelevant.  one visit to one page often adds over 10-15 hits.  A hit is just a file request from the server, so for every image that is requested from a page - it adds a hit on.

Its depends on the web developer and their skills for seo.  You get seo specialists but its mostly a lot of guess work these days - especially with google.

Additionally, you get very minimal traffic from search engines anyway depending on the type of site you run.  You really do need advertising which is why i'm struggling at n2kdesign.  The site doesn't make me any money because i don't charge for anything - therefore i can't afford to advertise it.

Pretty much, but its not enough is it.  You need ads on other peoples sites etc and they charge.  You also need dedicated community members who are willing to make frequent posts and spread the word.  So far the most dedicated members there are me and darksat.

No one else seems to be interested in joining or even posting.

Getting members /= SEO

Forums are a very different story.Long term post exchange is one way to go, especially for a webmaster forum because those who do post exchanges with you are infact webmasters. Contests and so on are also good.

Search engines only supply a minimum amount of traffic.  Its not usual for people to view more than one or pages on your web site if they came from a search engine.  Reason being they are looking for something very specific and if its not on the page they came onto, they'll hit back and goto the next search result and so on until they find what they are looking for.
